Hello, Class! Are you enjoying the rain and snow and rain and snow? At least we had a couple of snow days to relax! You have been busy working on your speeches, literature circles and writing projects, and I always enjoying watching you explore new topics. I would like to keep our blog going with some new conversations. I thought it would be fitting to use the wonderful World Wide Web to discuss the changes technology has made within classrooms.
I want you to watch part of the PBS Frontline special, Growing Up Online. Click on the Revolutions in Classrooms and Social Life section of the video. While you are watching, think about how you use the internet in your personal life. What can schools do to improve education through technology? How much time do you spend online? Have you ever been in a fight online? How much do your parents know about what you do online? Etc, etc, etc…

Follow the link and enjoy the show:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontlin/kidsonline/view/main.html

Now that you have watched the clip, I want you to respond in the comment section of this post. What can schools do to incorporate more technology into classrooms? How can we close the “digital divide” between students and teachers? What would help you learn specifically? What technology would you like to use at school? Remember to write your comment in Word to spell check before you post.

that was a really good video:) schools could unblock some of the things they block so the students can get the information they need. the digital divide has become to big and we should close it by showing the older generations why we use the computer so much and how it helps us. in school, i think we learn more with computers and looking at the lesson on a screen than to just look at a textbook and not pay attention and kids and teachers should use computers to learn and teach. kids would be more interested and learn more from a screen than a textbook.

This video expresses some of the technological issues kids, teachers, and school are dealing with today. Teen and kids are growing up in a techology enhanced enviroment. We learn from what we do on the computer. When teachers teach lesson from a textbook teens are more likely to become distracted and not pay attention. But, while on the computer you multitask. Doing more than one thing at one helps to stay focused.
The digital divide is a problem. Older people such as experienced teachers, aren't familiar with the technology kids are used to. Maybe a major problem teachers are having is that they don't want their students to do their homework on the internet. But, the internet is a fast and easy way to get needed infomation. This may help kids to get their homework turned in on time. Skills on the computer are also going to help us later in life. The job we might have will probably include some work on the computer. Using digital devices will only ready us for the future.

THis clip teaches you a lot because it explains how to cheat and how not to cheat on something. Also it tells you that some teachers just let their students take over in the classroom and work on the computers because they come from much older generations and they dont know how to use technology as good as this generation does. I know that I would rsther glue my eyes to the internet than glue them to a book that has NO fun in it at all. Also when you are typing essays and all that stuff and helps you type better and faster for next time. :)

This clip is good for all young and old. It shows us what happens in high school and every where else. Even over the computer, so at school and home you get a peice of reality not the same old stuff that you see in school. Even tho school is fun and yet strict there are some liments.

I think that schools can do more for us kids and use the technology that we use everyday. When they ask us to sit there and read out of a big old book you tend to get bored. If we could listen to it on our ipods or something that would be more interesting. I think that schools should give the teachers training and make sure that they know how to do all the things that could improve our education. This way they can make it easier for us to learn and concentrate. Instead of teachers using the old way of teaching they should listen the kids for once and respect the way we want to learn. We kids know how to do this stuff and instead of thinking yeah what ever they should take some time to learn about it. They could also find more time to recognize the fact that our generation was practically raised on a computer.

I liked this video because it is trying to make a valid point.Generations change as they go. Many teachers from later generations think that it is the same as reading a book for websites like sparknotes.com. But students are finding easier way to read books and find information. I believe that using the computer is an important tool to have in this time period. Many schools should have this interenet as a teaching method for teachers so they can use sparknotes to compare to other books. So they may demonstrate how they bridge the book. Finding the keys to the story. So a great tool used to get all the information out of the book.

I thought the movie was very interesting. I think that more classes should defiantly use technology for teaching. It would help keep the students interested and doing something. I would like to see the teachers using technology and the internet to teach the classes.

Yeah, that video was all true. I think all of the teachers should be using computers and be up to date with technology. Using more technology in the classrooms really would help us learn more because we are used to using all of the different types of technology.

I think all the technology in the schools is really cool. It would be nice if our school had that. The computers in every classroom would be awesome. I think schools should offer a computer class for the teachers so they could get more updated on some of the technology that the students know. If kids know this much about all the techno what else can they teach us in the computer class??

To close the digital divide between students and teachers all schools should have at least one computer class where students and teachers can learn about the new and changing technology of the internet. Also I think there should be at least one computer in every classroom. I think schools should talk about the situation instead of ignoring the fact that kids are always on the computer. Also schools can talk about the internet and give some advice about how not to put your address on Myspace and any other profile you have. Most schools do but some don’t and I think they should encourage it.

To incorporate more technology schools can turn their papers in on the internet. They can use internet resources for research. We can close the digital divide between students and teachers by having the teachers take classes to learn how to use the technology. The students could also teach the teachers what they know. Something that would help me learn would be an online textbook. All of our textbooks were online so that we didn’t have to carry our heavy book bags home. At school I would like to be able to brings lab tops to every class.

That was a very good video=]I think we can close the digital divide between students and teachers in the classrooms by using more electronics in class. I think students would learn better if the teachers did post pod casts for students to study and listen to that class again. Some students when they get out of the class are like “what did we just learn?” I think we should be able to bring ipods, recorders, and other school relative electronics to listen and record that class for that day.

Its nice to sometimes do things old fashioned, but in the future technology will be big and will still get bigger. I believe, as a student myself, we should learn things with technology then with things with textbooks. I think this because we will need to know how to do things on computers when we grow up and get careers. Also computers update things more often then text books. You may actually save more money by buying computers and programs that update everyday then spending money for new textbooks, which can’t update unless you buy new ones every year. Computers will also probably have more facts then books will have too.

When students have teachers who do use today’s technology to teach their class and some that use just text books then it can be frustrating going from using technology they are used to, to just reading out of their text books. Also kids are used to doing multiple things on the computer at home and are capable of working on more then one thing at a time. Students should be able to use modern technology in the classrooms because that is the world we are growing up in and it is a skill to know how to use the latest technology.

The digital divide is that the teachers their technology an old way and the students have stuff up to date. I think that we can have everything up to date because there is nothing bad about having everything up to date. I think that everything should not be blocked for us to use on the internet because we might nee to get on a site that is blocked. I think that all the talking online should not be aloud in the schools. I think that teachers should learn about technology a little bit more then they do right now. I think that we should be able to be on the internet for assignments.

I think the digital classrooms should be how kids of today should be able to learn because we are on computers and using iPods and mp3 players all the time. So they play a major part in our lives. It would also help us relate to what to do in classes better. It would make our class more fun, more interesting. Maybe we would pay more attention in classes.

The digital divide between students and teachers could be a little more open to where students can use technology as a part of their educational program. if the teacher does not fell that they know enough about the internet to use it as a reference for the education of their student then the schools administrators should set up a program to teach the teachers about technology and bring them more up to date with it. I myself do not use the internet, but I use it quite often as a reference.

to help the digital divide, they should inform the teachers about all this technology. the students already know alot about the web and how to search on it and even post websites. to actually end it then they should help the teachers learn more about it.
the video was pretty interesting =]
we should show that computers aren't all full of bad things and there is purposeful uses for this. students would pay alottttt more atteniton than they do now. textbooks, chalkboards are all not very exciting. the newest technology would definitely spark some interests =]

That was a good video. They should block some site that they don’t want the students to be on. The digital divide became big some of them should be closed. From this video they show you how to cheat and not cheat. The computers aren’t full of bad things. Chalkboards, textbooks are not exciting. The newer technology’s are interesting.
